Cannot remember when art was not a major part of her life. Living overseas in Libya and Aruba, you can see different cultures and styles evident in her art. At age thirteen, she found herself sketching at the base of the Acropolis in Greece. This led to her love of Architecture where she received a Bachelor of Architecture at the Univ. of Texas. Her abilities won her the title of “Best of Show” with the Doyle Wilson Corp. before graduation. Practicing architecture in Washington DC for 15 years and ready to branch out on her own, she began her artist career in 2000. Her Abstract style pulls its strength from travel, architecture, and her faith. The work builds from within, form following function, familiar forms and use of strong bold colors to convey tension and emotional yearning. Her process begins with a design sketch and follows to completion using raw material, recycled scraps, paper, scissors, and a needle as her drawing instrument.
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]As a multimedia artist background, Debra can delve into many aspects of art history, science, math to instruct to all ages and abilities to assist development of personal creative style. A weekly class includes artists with a severe handicap, RETTS syndrome, challenging Debra to implement an art lesson with tools that are not used by a common hand. Lacking fine motor skills, ability to speak, Debra presents choices to find joy in creating. She is also a certified to instruct Creative Aging and continues to do so virtually as the 2020 pandemic set in. In 2013, she contracted with an inner-city school to engage students in math by reinforcing geometry concepts through art; an outdoor mural was completed by 50 sixth graders. Debra has painted four murals for the Maricopa County Burn Unit, spear-heading a thirty-person volunteer project. She has served as Director of Art Education for a not for profit, The Creative Arts Academy, 2010-2014, with Summer Art Camps in community.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/2"][vc_column_text]
Her work is featured in member art, SAQA Journal on numerous occasions. She is the cover artist for Director’s Cut, 2010, vol. 2, 4, 6. Works are featured in Artseen, a faith-based publication Feb. 2012. She illustrated the front cover of When the Bird Sings by Kristin Caraway. Soon to be released is her award-winning art” Abstract”, for the Goodyear AZ prospectus 2025. Sheillustrated a children’s book, Bee Kind: Just Bee Cause, for the honeyfundation.org, 2019. Second book in draft to be released in 2021. On exhibit is first place award winning Blue Ice currently at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah KT and part of a catalog collection, a 3- year travelling exhibit.

Her art, Dad, Me and Live TV selected by the “Fly Me to the Moon” competition for international travel for the 50th anniversary of Mans walk on the Moon, has returned from a 3 year tour now showing at Presidio, Goodyear AZ. First stop was the Intl’ Quilt Festival ’17.
Debra’s work is also in part of travelling national exhibit of Celebration of Strong Women since 1920. Debra depicted her Great Aunts, Women Airforce Pilots, in WWII. Her audio story of her aunts and her art is now part of the National Archives. Her work is published for both the former art mentioned in catalogue books available through Amazon and Schiffer Publishing. In addition, travelling in juried exhibit, two works for Our Story: Human Rights, depicting her life during school age integration and a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Jail cell sermon. Upcoming 4-man showing at Arts HQ will house a collection of her work and Vision Gallery, Chandler AZ will showcase her largest work to date through January 2021.

Debra is a member of Int’l Decorative Artisans League, Studio Art Quilt Associate, Vision Gallery, San Diego, Phoenix Art Museum, Shemer Art Gallery, Scottsdale, the AZ Artist Guild, juried member, Catitude Studio/Gallery, West Valley Arts Council, WHAM (team member), Estrella Mountain Church, and Univ. of Texas Alumni Assoc. Her art exhibited at Chandler Vision Gallery, 2017, won first place. She has been juried into many national and international shows including Pathfinders at Southern Utah Museum of Art, Sacred Threads, Washington DC., Artist Invitational at Academy of Art, Lynchburg VA. First ever all FIBER AS ART at Arts HQ, Surprise AZ, 2017 won Hon. Men. Third place winner for Surprise Invitational’16 and ’19. Solo show includes, The Vault, Culver City, CA, 2012. Debra currently resides in Goodyear AZ with her husband and dog Astro
