Local Sun City Artist Celebrates 100th Birthday
Anna Marie Peterson will celebrate at the West Valley Arts HQ Gallery
Surprise, AZ (November 10, 2016) Sun City artist, Anna Marie Peterson will celebrate her 100th birthday and the West Valley Arts Council is helping her mark the occasion by hosting a birthday celebration at the Arts HQ gallery on Thursday, December 1st from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Anna Marie was born at home, on December 5, 1916, and grew up in Ames, Iowa. She graduated in 1941 from Iowa State University with a BS degree in Home Economics Applied Art. She developed an interest for art years ago by making bed quilts for family members and serving as a church organist for 70 years. Anna Marie now spends her time making wall art by using a rare art form known as Hand Needle Felting. This process consists of using a felt background and needle-punching bits of raw wool roving’s or other yarns through the felt with long barbed single or multiple needles. There is no drawing of the design on the background. She simply “paints” with strands of raw dyed wool.
Anna Marie has only been practicing Hand Needle Felting for 6 years and already received 2nd place at the inaugural Surprise Invitational exhibit for her piece titled Polish Silver Chicken. When asked what inspires her art, Anna Marie revealed, “Most of my inspiration comes from nature. I enjoy choosing colors and fabrics, which I manipulate, paint, dye, embroider, or otherwise embellish to express the subject I have chosen.“
Not only is Anna Marie an amazing artist, she is also the author of her very own art blog Gramma Ann’s Felting, Quilting and Stuff with over 6,500 hits! Anna Marie’s daughter, Betty Hahn said, “When Mom learned how to needle felt, we never guessed she would make over 100 pieces in the next 6 years, have over 40 pieces juried into shows including the Phoenix Airport, and be represented by two galleries at age 99! With the blog she started at age 97 and Facebook, she has made friends all over the world. Every day she has new friends and fans. We are so proud of her!” You can follow Anna Marie’s blog at grammaannsfelting.blogspot.com. “Anna Marie’s spirit and enthusiasm for her art are felt by all. She is a wonderful addition to the West Valley arts community and is an inspiration to everyone,” Bernadette Mills, Executive Director, West Valley Arts Council. Anna Marie ends each of her blog posts with a positive quote like this one from a post in July, “I’m trying to be awesome today, but I’m exhausted from being so freakin’ awesome last weekend.”
In September, Anna Marie was featured in the Australian magazine Textile Fiber Forum with a full page spread.
